Front page head! ines in the newspaper concerning the medical profession are becoming frequent( I ,2). Why? Our noble profession of yesteryears was entrusted by society with the belief that the profession will conscienciously look after the best interest of the sick and the vulnerable. This profes- sional trust means self government, self determina- tion and self policing. Changes in the Thai society in the last 4 decades have eroded that public trust. Ever since national socio-economic plan- ning was established over 35 years ago, it and the subsequent 7 plans, only emphasized economic development using human resources as commer- cial means to attain material wealth. Thai society had since become very materialistic.
