After 12 weeks there were significant increases in the concentrations of TC in all groups. There was no significant difference in TC concentrations between the 3 groups. There was a highly significant reduction in atheroma formation in Groups 2 and 3 compared with Group I. These results suggest both oral and percutaneous oestradiol have a direct protective effect on the cardiovascular system independent of serum concentrations of total cholesterol.
