The meaning of “the best” is “to be number one” or “second to none” or in the case of a doctor “to be the most highly skilled”. Whoever is believed to be the best should be proud, because those people nominating the “best” infer goodness, politeness, and fruitfulness in these persons. It should make the recipients feel fulfilled and compel them to have a better social behavior.
In the community, when an organization is being called “the best”, its social responsibility is highlighted and many performances are expected towards benefits and social function. As an example, one of the best universities in Thailand is Chulalongkorn. This university has a long history for education and social services. Because of its social services, it is being seen as being the best one. However, the university’s member staff cannot speak for themselves as being the best. While they may be the best, they are part of the team. They need the social approval, otherwise the people near them will feel awful, and will ask many questions on the statement.
Therefore, to state that one is “the best” is against Buddhist teaching. This teaching advises to speak at proper time, with honesty, politeness, beneficence, and mercy.
Whenever a doctor says, “my work is the best”, it challenges the feeling of the audience, possibly making it negative. This is further emphasized if this is repeated twice, thrice or even more often. Additionally, that negative feeling will be even more prominent in case where the patient is suffering of it the outcome is worse and the patient die.
Therefore, the word “best” will stand for with limited meaning, and should be utilized properly to maintain peace in the society.
